Hoya mathilde belongs to the sprawling Apocynaceae genus Hoya, a group of largely epiphytic vines distributed across South and Southeast Asia, where they grow attached to tree bark and rock faces in humid, filtered light. 'Grey Fairy' is a selection prized for leaf color and texture. The foliage carries a soft, chalky grey-green cast with a fine pubescence across the surface, and each leaf sits thick and slightly cupped along the midrib, a succulence typical of hoyas adapted to intermittent moisture on their host trees. The wiry, reddish-brown stems carry the same fuzzed texture, most pronounced on new growth near the tip. In certain light the foliage reads almost silver, which distinguishes it from the glossier greens more common across the genus.

Rare Plant Fairy propagates this cultivar from stem cuttings, taken to preserve the leaf color and habit true to the parent plant. In cultivation it wants a chunky, fast-draining mix, bright indirect light with tolerance for a few hours of gentle direct sun, and a thorough drying out between waterings, given its succulent leaf structure.
