Alocasia chantrieri is a tropical aroid valued for its elongated foliage, dark coloration, and finely textured leaf margins. The species is associated with the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it grows in warm, shaded conditions beneath the forest canopy. Its narrow leaves emerge in deep green to near-black tones, with gently scalloped margins that give the foliage a softer outline than many of the broader-leaved Alocasia.
This pink variegated form takes the naturally dark foliage of the species and adds irregular areas of soft pink throughout the leaf blade. The variegation can appear as delicate marbling, scattered patches, or larger sectors, with individual leaves developing their own balance of green and pink. New growth can reveal particularly fresh coloration before gradually developing its mature pattern, making each leaf somewhat different from the last.
The plant maintains a compact, upright growth habit and performs best in bright, indirect light, evenly moist but well-draining soil, warm stable temperatures, and elevated humidity. Good airflow is beneficial when growing in higher humidity, while consistent light helps support strong coloration and healthy new growth. The combination of nearly black foliage and soft pink variegation makes this an unusual selection for collectors of Alocasia and other dark-leaved aroids.
