Begonia semperflorens, more familiarly known as the wax begonia, is prized in its straight species form for tidy, glossy foliage and near-constant flowering, but this pink variegated selection reworks that reputation into something considerably more collectible. The rounded, asymmetric leaves carry a shifting wash of rose, salmon, and deep maroon, with darker near-black patches breaking up the pink in a pattern that reads differently on every leaf rather than repeating a fixed template. New growth tends to emerge with a stronger pink cast before settling into the mottled combination visible on the mature foliage, and the plant continues to flower through the variegation, with small white blooms appearing even on heavily colored growth.
Wax begonias are native to Brazil, where they grow along forest margins and in partially shaded, humid conditions rather than deep canopy shade. A plant carrying this much reduced green tissue would struggle to compete against all-green counterparts in that setting, which is part of why forms like this one are maintained deliberately in cultivation rather than found persisting on their own.
In cultivation, this begonia does best with bright indirect light, since low light tends to mute the pink tones back toward green, along with consistent moisture and good airflow to guard against the powdery mildew this genus is prone to.
